GILGIT-BALTISTAN โ A tragic incident occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan during a political rally, leaving at least two people dead and two others injured. The event took place in the Tangir area during an election campaign.
Police said the rally was organized as part of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) campaign for upcoming elections in Gilgit-Baltistan. The situation turned violent when firing broke out during the gathering.
According to initial reports, a child was killed on the spot after being hit by a bullet. Three others were also injured in the incident. One of the injured later died in hospital, raising the death toll to two.
Authorities believe the firing was accidental. Police stated that an AK-47 slipped from the hands of a participant. This caused bullets to be discharged into the crowd during the rally in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The incident video quickly spread on social media, drawing public concern and criticism. Local authorities have launched a full investigation into the matter.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered by the police. Officials are working to identify those responsible for the negligence during the rally in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Following the tragedy, authorities imposed Section 144 in the district. The move aims to maintain law and order during the ongoing election campaign.
The government has also banned the display of weapons in public gatherings. Security measures have been tightened across sensitive areas of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Gilgit-Baltistan Home Secretary Faisal Ahsan Pirzada confirmed that senior police officials have been directed to investigate the incident. The DIG and DPO are leading the inquiry.
He added that additional security arrangements have been put in place. These steps aim to prevent further incidents during the election period in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections have been completed. Polling is scheduled for Sunday across the region.
According to election officials, voting will take place in 10 districts across three divisions. A total of 403 candidates are contesting in 24 constituencies in Gilgit-Baltistan.
