A possible Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) event prompted emergency measures in the HisperโHoper region of Gilgit-Baltistan after authorities detected a sudden increase in river discharge from the Hisper catchment area.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), its GLOF Early Warning System recorded a rapid rise in water levels. The unusual increase triggered immediate alerts to the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, district administrations, and other relevant agencies.
Following the warning, local authorities quickly began precautionary actions. Residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas were advised to stay alert and take necessary safety measures. Officials also warned travelers on the Karakoram Highway to remain cautious due to the risk of flooding and possible damage to infrastructure.
District administrations, local magistrates, community leaders, and volunteers launched awareness campaigns across vulnerable areas. Warnings were issued to residents of Hoper, Hisper, Ganish, Murtazaabad, Nasirabad, Mayun, Hussainabad, Rahimabad, Nomal, Jutal, Jaglot Colony, and Chilmish.
Authorities used mosque and Imambargah announcements to spread information quickly among local communities. Monitoring teams were also deployed at important bridges and river crossings to track water levels and assess potential risks.
Officials reported that floodwaters washed away around 200 to 250 feet of the Hisper Road. The damage disrupted access to the valley and created transportation difficulties for residents and emergency responders. Authorities estimate that repair work may take more than a week, which could lead to logistical challenges in the affected region.
Despite the sharp increase in water flow, no casualties or major emergencies had been reported by late evening. However, officials continued to closely monitor the situation as floodwaters moved downstream toward the Hunza and Gilgit river systems.
Authorities credited the PMDโs early warning system for helping disaster management agencies respond in time. The alerts allowed officials to conduct community outreach and implement preventive measures before floodwaters reached downstream settlements.

The PMD has advised residents in vulnerable parts of Gilgit-Baltistan to remain vigilant, avoid riverbanks, and follow instructions issued by local authorities. Monitoring and response operations are continuing as officials assess the situation and work to reduce potential risks.
