The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Heatwave alert across Punjab, warning that temperatures could rise sharply between June 8 and June 11. Several cities are expected to experience extreme weather conditions, with temperatures potentially reaching as high as 48 degrees Celsius.
According to the Met Office, the upcoming Heatwave is likely to affect a large part of the province. Citizens have been advised to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak daytime hours.
Weather officials said temperatures in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and Gujrat may range between 41°C and 44°C from June 8 to June 10. Residents in these areas are expected to experience very hot and dry conditions throughout the forecast period.
The situation could become more severe in central Punjab. Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, and Jhang are expected to record temperatures between 44°C and 48°C from June 8 to June 11. Such conditions could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Similarly, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Pakpattan, and Rahim Yar Khan are also likely to experience temperatures ranging from 44°C to 48°C during the same period.
The PMD has also warned residents in Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Kot Addu to prepare for extremely hot weather. Temperatures in these districts are also expected to remain between 44°C and 48°C.
Experts say prolonged exposure to intense heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Children, elderly individuals, and people with existing health conditions are considered most vulnerable during a Heatwave.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. People are also encouraged to wear light-colored clothing and remain in shaded or air-conditioned environments whenever possible.
The latest forecast comes as Pakistan enters the peak summer season. Rising temperatures may also increase electricity demand and place additional pressure on public services.
