The Punjab government has imposed strict security measures across the province for Muharram-ul-Haram. Authorities have enforced Section 144 from 1st to 10th Muharram. The step is part of a wider plan to maintain peace and order.
Officials said the decision under Section 144 aims to ensure public safety during religious gatherings and processions. It also focuses on protecting lives and property. The restrictions are designed to promote religious harmony during the sacred month.
According to the Punjab Home Department, the notification includes multiple preventive measures. No new traditions or unauthorized practices will be allowed in processions or majalis. Authorities said these steps are necessary to avoid misunderstandings and tensions.
Under Section 144, the display of weapons, firearms, explosives, and other dangerous items has been strictly banned. This applies to all public areas unless special permission is granted. Officials warned that violations will face strict legal action.
The government has also banned provocative slogans, speeches, and gestures. Any activity that may hurt religious or sectarian sentiments is prohibited. Authorities have further warned against spreading hate content on social media platforms.
Security arrangements have been tightened along procession routes. Rooftop bunkers or fortified structures have been completely banned. Citizens have also been directed not to store stones, bottles, or other objects on rooftops.
Officials said spectators will not be allowed to gather on rooftops or shop platforms during processions. These steps have been introduced under Section 144 to prevent potential security risks.
In addition, a temporary ban on motorcycle pillion riding will be enforced on 9th and 10th Muharram. However, the restriction will not apply to women, senior citizens, or law enforcement officials.
Authorities confirmed that most restrictions under Section 144 will remain in place throughout the first ten days of Muharram. The double-riding ban will only apply during Ashura days.
The notification has been issued under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. Officials said the move is necessary to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram-ul-Haram.
The Home Department has also instructed a public awareness campaign. It will use TV, newspapers, and digital media to inform citizens about Section 144 restrictions. Authorities have urged people to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies.
Overall, the enforcement of Section 144 reflects the governmentโs commitment to maintaining peace, security, and interfaith harmony during Muharram.
