Pakistan Moves To Modernise Motorways With ITS Upgrade Plan

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed authorities to speed up major reforms aimed at improving Pakistanโ€™s highway system. The focus is on introducing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and cashless toll collection across national routes.

Officials said the goal is to modernise motorways through advanced digital infrastructure. The new system will improve traffic flow, security, and passenger convenience on busy highways.

During a high-level meeting at the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters, the minister ordered the immediate inclusion of the M2 Motorway in the ITS program. He stressed that all cameras, communication networks, and security systems must work under one integrated platform.

The government also plans to modernise motorways by introducing a fully cashless electronic toll collection system. This system will allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. It will reduce delays and improve travel efficiency on major routes.

Officials confirmed that the electronic toll system will be linked with Safe City networks. This integration is expected to improve monitoring and help law enforcement agencies respond faster to incidents. It will also support better traffic management across the country.

The minister said the government wants to modernise motorways with a strong focus on safety and public service. He instructed authorities to ensure Motorway Police presence at all service areas. He also called for uniform facilities for travelers across the network.

Emergency response measures were also reviewed during the meeting. Abdul Aleem Khan directed that Rescue 1122 staff, fire brigades, and ambulances must be available at all motorway service areas. He also emphasized the need for faster emergency response and improved air ambulance services.

Special attention was given to highways in northern areas. The minister ordered improved safety standards on Murree Expressway and other key routes. He also directed the installation of safety guardrails on roads like Jaglot-Skardu and Mansehra-Kaghan-Naran.

To support tourism and travel comfort, temporary rest facilities in northern regions will be upgraded into permanent rest areas. These facilities will be equipped with better services for tourists and transporters.

Officials from the National Highway Authority and Motorway Police briefed the minister on ongoing operations and administrative issues. Several key proposals were approved at the end of the meeting.

The government said these reforms will help modernise motorways, improve road safety, and bring Pakistanโ€™s transport system in line with modern global standards.
