Pakistan Orders Action Against Artificial Fertilizer Price Hikes

Pakistan Orders Action Against Artificial Fertilizer Price Hikes

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has chaired a high-level meeting on fertilizer supply, pricing, and availability across Pakistan. The meeting reviewed Urea and DAP stocks for the Kharif season and preparations for the upcoming Rabi season.

Officials confirmed that all fertilizer plants in the country are operating at full capacity. More than one million tonnes of Urea are currently available in the market. Authorities said there is no shortage, and supply levels are sufficient for farmers nationwide.

The minister stressed strict monitoring of prices and warned of action against any illegal practices in the fertilizer market. He said no unjustified price increase will be tolerated under any circumstances.

He further directed action against hoarding, profiteering, and artificial shortages that could harm farmers. He emphasized that transportation or operational costs should not be used as an excuse for raising prices.

Despite global market pressures, participants noted that fertilizer prices in Pakistan have remained relatively stable. Officials credited coordinated efforts between manufacturers and government agencies for maintaining smooth supply.

However, the minister ordered action against any company or dealer involved in market manipulation. He said strict regulatory oversight will continue to protect farmers from exploitation.

Provincial representatives reported satisfactory Urea availability in most regions. Some supply issues were noted in remote areas due to logistics and security challenges. The minister assured full federal support to resolve these issues.

The meeting also reviewed the DAP fertilizer situation in detail. Officials confirmed sufficient stocks for the current season. However, rising international prices and supply chain risks may affect the next Rabi season.

Concerns were raised over recent increases in DAP prices despite adequate stock levels. The minister questioned the justification for these hikes and reiterated that action against speculative pricing will be enforced where necessary.

He instructed stakeholders to ensure transparent distribution and prevent any artificial shortage in the market. He also called for stronger coordination between federal and provincial authorities.

Punjab proposed a national-level strategy involving all stakeholders to secure fertilizer imports and stabilize prices. The suggestion includes government-to-government agreements to avoid future shortages.

The minister said the matter has already been taken up at the highest level, including the Prime Minister and provincial leadership. He assured that a coordinated national policy will be developed soon.

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment that fertilizer availability, affordability, and fair distribution will remain top national priorities. Authorities reiterated that strict action against market violations will continue to protect farmers and ensure food security.
