Karachi Flyover Project Faces Concerns Over Planned K-IV Water Pipeline

Karachi Flyover Project Faces Concerns Over Planned K-IV Water Pipeline

The proposed Flyover Project at Karachiโ€™s Disco Bakery intersection has sparked concerns before construction begins. Officials say the project may conflict with the planned K-IV water pipeline and other infrastructure work along the same route.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab recently announced that construction of the Flyover Project will begin on August 14. According to the announced timeline, the flyover is expected to be completed within 90 days.

However, officials and local residents have questioned whether construction should start before the K-IV pipeline is installed. They believe the sequence of projects could create unnecessary complications and lead to future road damage.

Officials from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) said a 96-inch K-IV (R-2) water pipeline is already planned for the same corridor. The pipeline will extend from Abul Hassan Isphahani Road to Disco Bakery and continue toward Gulshan Chowrangi.

According to officials, the pipeline project will require extensive road excavation along the route. The digging is expected to reach a depth of six to eight feet across the planned alignment.

They warned that carrying out pipeline work after the Flyover Project is completed could create additional challenges. It may also increase traffic disruptions and raise project costs.

Officials believe proper coordination between departments is necessary before construction starts. They said both projects should be planned carefully to avoid overlapping work and unnecessary delays.

The K-IV project is considered an important water supply scheme for Karachi. It aims to improve water availability for the city’s growing population by expanding the existing supply network.

Because the pipeline is expected to pass through the same area as the proposed flyover, experts have highlighted the need for technical planning before work begins.

Residents have also expressed concerns about possible traffic congestion. They fear repeated road excavation could affect daily travel if the projects are not properly coordinated.

The Disco Bakery intersection is already one of the city’s busy traffic points. Any major construction activity in the area is likely to affect commuters, businesses, and public transport.

Sources said officials from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Water Corporation are expected to hold a meeting soon. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the issue and find a practical solution before construction begins.

Authorities are expected to review the alignment of both projects during the discussions. They may also consider changes to the construction schedule to reduce future disruptions.

Urban planning experts often recommend completing underground utility work before building major road infrastructure. This approach helps prevent repeated excavation and reduces maintenance costs over time.

The planned Flyover Project is intended to improve traffic flow at one of Karachiโ€™s key intersections. At the same time, the K-IV pipeline remains a critical project for strengthening the city’s water supply system.

Officials are now expected to coordinate both projects to ensure that development work proceeds efficiently. They hope careful planning will reduce delays, avoid additional costs, and minimize inconvenience for the public.
