July Electricity Bills May Rise as CPPA Seeks 82-Paisa Per Unit Tariff Increase

Pakistan’s power consumers may face another increase in their monthly expenses as a proposal has been submitted to raise electricity tariffs by 82 paisas per unit. If approved, the increase could lead to higher Electricity Bills for consumers across the country in July.

The proposed increase has been requested under the monthly Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) mechanism. The application was submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) and will be reviewed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

According to NEPRA, a public hearing on the request is scheduled for June 30. The regulator will examine the fuel cost data and supporting calculations before making a final decision.

In its petition, the CPPA stated that the average fuel cost of electricity generation during May was Rs9.25 per unit. Based on this figure, the agency has requested an increase of 82 paisas per unit under the fuel adjustment formula.

If the proposal receives approval, consumers could see higher Electricity Bills in the coming month. Reports suggest that the increase may place an additional financial burden of around Rs12 billion on electricity users nationwide.

The Fuel Price Adjustment mechanism allows electricity tariffs to be revised according to changes in fuel costs used for power generation. These adjustments are typically reflected in consumer bills after regulatory approval.

The latest proposal comes at a time when many households are already struggling with rising living expenses. Increasing utility costs, inflation, and higher prices of essential goods have placed pressure on family budgets across the country.

Business owners and industrial consumers are also closely watching the regulator’s decision. Any increase in energy costs can affect operating expenses and production costs for various sectors.

NEPRA will assess whether the requested adjustment is justified based on actual fuel costs and generation data. After reviewing all relevant information during the hearing, the authority will announce its final decision.

If approved, the revised charges will be added to upcoming Electricity Bills, resulting in higher payments for millions of consumers. However, if the request is rejected or modified, the impact on consumers may be reduced.

The decision expected after the June 30 hearing will determine whether the proposed tariff increase is passed on to consumers. Until then, households and businesses remain concerned about the possibility of another rise in Electricity Bills amid ongoing economic challenges.
