Pakistani actress Sabeena Farooq has spoken against the killing of stray dogs following reports of rabies cases. She questioned the practice of removing animals through mass culling and called for more humane solutions.
In an Instagram story shared on Tuesday, Sabeena Farooq expressed concern over the repeated calls for dog killings whenever rabies cases are reported. She said collective punishment of animals is unfair and lacks compassion.
The actress compared the situation with human accountability and said that individuals are not punished for the actions of others. She argued that the same principle should apply to animals, as only some dogs may carry diseases.
Sabeena Farooq wrote that people with understanding and kindness would recognize the importance of treating animals with care. She also responded to criticism from some social media users who disagreed with her views.
Addressing those who sent negative messages, she said she hoped they would develop more compassion and empathy in the future.
Her statements came after she shared a video posted by Lahore-based animal rights activist Uswa Ahmed. The video showed sanitation workers linked with the Suthra Punjab project transporting a trailer reportedly containing dog bodies.
In the video, Ahmed questioned the workers about the situation. The workers denied involvement in killing the animals and left the location while Ahmed continued following them.
The issue has also received legal attention. The Lahore High Court has previously stopped authorities from carrying out dog culling operations. The court directed officials to use humane population control methods under the Punjab Animal Birth Control Policy 2021.
Despite the court’s directions, reports of stray dog killings in Lahore have continued. Some reports claimed that animals were being killed through methods such as shooting and poisoning.
The debate has renewed discussions about balancing public health concerns with animal welfare. Supporters of humane methods believe vaccination and population management programs can provide safer alternatives.
