The newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly is scheduled to meet on Monday at 3 p.m. to elect its speaker, deputy speaker, and leader of the house. The session comes a day after 30 newly elected lawmakers took oath following the recent regional elections.
Assembly Speaker Nazir Ahmed Advocate administered the oath to the members on Sunday. After the swearing-in ceremony, the session was adjourned until Monday to allow the assembly to begin the process of electing its key leadership positions.
The political spotlight remains on Gilgit-Baltistan as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) prepares to form the next government in the region. The party emerged as the largest political force in the recent elections and is expected to lead a coalition government with the support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
According to election results, PPP secured 11 seats in the 33-member assembly. PML-N won six seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party secured four seats. PTI-backed independent candidates and several other parties also gained representation in the assembly.
Political sources said PPP and PML-N have reached an understanding similar to their cooperation at the federal level. The alliance is expected to provide the coalition with a comfortable majority in the assembly.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has nominated Amjad Hussain as the party’s candidate for the chief minister’s position. Party leaders have expressed confidence that they will secure enough support to form the government once the allocation of reserved seats is completed.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly is expected to elect the speaker and deputy speaker before moving forward with the election of the leader of the house. These developments are likely to pave the way for the formation of a new government in the region.
Three constituency results are still awaiting official notification due to ongoing court proceedings. However, political observers believe the coalition already has a strong position in the assembly.
