A subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on National Heritage has recommended reopening Mazar-e-Quaid to the public. The recommendation came after a review of security arrangements and management at Pakistanโs national monument.
The committee meeting was chaired by Senator Waqar Mehdi. Senator Bushra Anjum also attended the session and later joined the media briefing to share the committeeโs recommendations.
Speaking after the meeting, Senator Mehdi described Mazar-e-Quaid as the face of Pakistan. He said the historic monument represents the country’s national identity and should be maintained to the highest standards.
The senator stressed the need to improve administration and visitor facilities at the mausoleum. He urged all relevant government institutions to work together to strengthen management and enhance public services.
According to Senator Mehdi, security concerns have remained the main reason the monument has stayed closed to the general public for the past three to four years. He expressed optimism that public access could be restored once the required security measures are fully implemented.
To support this process, the committee has established a special panel. The panel will examine existing security arrangements and suggest practical steps for reopening Mazar-e-Quaid while ensuring the safety of visitors.
Officials said the recommendations will focus on balancing public access with effective security measures. The goal is to make the monument accessible without compromising visitor safety.
Another meeting with the Mazar-e-Quaid Management Board has been scheduled within the next 15 days. During the meeting, officials will review progress on the committee’s recommendations and discuss further improvements.
Senator Bushra Anjum also supported reopening the national monument. She said efforts are already underway to further beautify Mazar-e-Quaid and improve its overall environment.
She encouraged the media to promote the historical and national importance of the mausoleum in a positive manner. She added that greater public awareness could help strengthen appreciation for the country’s heritage.
The committee believes reopening the monument would allow more citizens and visitors to connect with Pakistan’s history. Officials also hope that improved management and upgraded facilities will provide a better experience for visitors.
The Senate subcommittee emphasized that security will remain the top priority throughout the process. Authorities will carefully assess all recommendations before making a final decision on reopening.

If the proposed measures are implemented successfully, Mazar-e-Quaid could soon welcome the public again after several years of restricted access. Further discussions are expected in the coming weeks as the management board and relevant institutions review the committee’s recommendations.
