PDMA has launched province-wide emergency measures to prepare for an expected heatwave and rising humidity across Punjab. The action follows special directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif as authorities step up efforts to protect residents from extreme weather conditions.
According to the PDMA, climate change is expected to increase both temperatures and humidity in many parts of the province. Officials have warned that hot and humid weather is likely to continue throughout July, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
To improve public safety, heatwave relief camps have been established in vulnerable districts. Hospitals have also been instructed to set up dedicated heatwave counters and ensure that essential medicines are available for patients suffering from heatstroke or dehydration.
The authority said temperatures and humidity are expected to rise further in Thal, Cholistan, and several districts of southern Punjab. These areas are considered more vulnerable due to prolonged exposure to extreme heat during the summer season.
To reduce the impact of the heatwave, clean drinking water arrangements have been strengthened across affected areas. Filtration plants, water bowsers, and public water points will provide safe drinking water to residents. District administrations have also been directed to ensure a continuous supply of water where needed.
As part of the emergency response, smog guns have been deployed in districts expected to experience severe heat and humidity. The measure aims to improve local conditions in areas facing the highest temperatures.
The PDMA has activated 24-hour control rooms across Punjab to monitor weather conditions and coordinate emergency responses. All district control rooms remain on high alert to provide quick assistance if the situation worsens.
Hospitals and district administrations have been instructed to keep ORS, cold drinking water, and medical staff ready to treat heatstroke patients. Mobile health teams will also remain active in urban areas to respond quickly to dehydration and other heat-related emergencies. Relief camps have been equipped with first aid supplies, ORS, and clean drinking water.
The authority is working closely with the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Rescue services, the Livestock Department, and district administrations. This coordination will help ensure a rapid response to changing weather conditions across the province.
In addition to the heatwave, officials warned that rising temperatures could speed up snowmelt in northern areas, increasing the possibility of water-related challenges in some regions.
The PDMA has advised the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, when temperatures are usually at their highest. People are encouraged to wear loose, light-colored clothing, drink plenty of water, and take regular breaks in shaded or cool places.
