You Can Transfer eSIMs to New Phones Up to 10 Times for Free PTA

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that users can transfer eSIMs between compatible devices free of charge up to 10 times. The move is aimed at making digital SIM technology more convenient for smartphone users across the country.

PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman shared the update during a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat. He said the facility is designed to support users who upgrade or replace their smartphones without facing additional transfer costs.

According to the PTA chief, the free transfer policy will encourage more consumers to adopt eSIMs as mobile technology continues to evolve. The regulator believes the initiative will make the transition from physical SIM cards to digital SIMs easier for users.

The chairman explained that customers often change their mobile devices over time. Allowing free transfers ensures they can continue using their existing mobile connections without unnecessary expenses.

In addition to the transfer policy, the PTA is also working to lower the cost of obtaining eSIMs in Pakistan. The authority has started discussions with mobile network operators to reduce current issuance charges.

At present, customers may pay around Rs. 2,000 for an eSIM issued by some operators. The regulator is seeking to reduce this fee to between Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 1,500.

Officials expect the cost to decrease further as more users adopt the technology. Higher demand and wider availability are expected to make digital SIM services more affordable in the future.

Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIMs are built directly into compatible smartphones and connected devices. Users do not need to insert or replace a physical SIM card to activate mobile services.

Instead, the activation process is completed digitally through a supported mobile operator. This allows customers to set up their mobile connection more quickly and conveniently.

The technology also makes it easier for users to switch between supported mobile networks. In many cases, changing operators no longer requires replacing a physical SIM card.

Modern smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and other connected devices are increasingly offering eSIM support. As manufacturers expand compatibility, digital SIM technology is becoming more common around the world.

The PTA believes wider adoption of eSIMs will improve user convenience and support Pakistan’s growing digital ecosystem. The regulator is continuing discussions with telecom companies to encourage affordable pricing and broader availability.

Industry experts also believe eSIM technology can simplify mobile connectivity for consumers while reducing dependence on physical SIM cards. It may also improve flexibility for users who frequently change devices or travel internationally.

The PTA has not yet announced when reduced issuance charges will take effect. However, officials said negotiations with telecom operators are ongoing, and further updates will be shared once an agreement is reached.
