PDMA Issues GLOF Alert for Upper KP Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

PDMA Issues GLOF Alert for Upper KP Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The warning comes as heavy rainfall is expected across northern parts of the province from July 19 to July 25.

According to the authority, PDMA Issues the alert due to forecasts of widespread and continuous rainfall. Officials fear the weather conditions could increase the risk of flash floods, landslides, and glacier-related flooding in mountainous regions.

The authority said prolonged rainfall may accelerate glacier melting in northern KP. This could increase the chances of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which occur when water from glacial lakes suddenly bursts through natural barriers.

Such floods can move quickly downstream and cause severe damage to nearby communities, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

The latest PDMA Issues warning covers several districts considered vulnerable to glacier-related disasters. These include Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Bahrain, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra.

People living near rivers, streams, and mountainous areas have been advised to remain cautious during the forecast period. Authorities warned that flash floods and landslides could develop rapidly if heavy rainfall continues.

Following the alert, district administrations in the affected areas have been directed to remain on high alert. Local authorities have also been instructed to activate emergency response plans to deal with any possible situation.

The PDMA has ordered officials to identify vulnerable locations and prepare evacuation centers where residents can be moved if necessary. Emergency teams have also been asked to remain ready for quick response operations.

Officials stressed the importance of taking preventive measures before weather conditions worsen. They urged district administrations to closely monitor rainfall and glacier activity throughout the week.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous areas during periods of heavy rain. People living close to rivers and streams should also stay informed about weather updates and follow instructions from local authorities.

The disaster management authority said early preparedness could help reduce the impact of natural disasters and protect lives and property.

In case of an emergency, residents can contact the PDMA helpline by dialing 1700 for assistance and information.

Weather-related emergencies become more common during the monsoon season, especially in northern Pakistan where steep terrain and melting glaciers increase the risk of flooding.

The PDMA Issues alert serves as a precautionary measure to help authorities and residents prepare for possible emergencies. Officials will continue monitoring weather conditions and issue further advisories if the situation changes.
