NBP President Rehmat Ali Hasnie Gets Two-Week Tenure Extension

NBP President Rehmat Ali Hasnie Gets Two-Week Tenure Extension

The federal government has extended the tenure of NBP President and Chief Executive Officer Rehmat Ali Hasnie for another two weeks. The extension will remain effective until a new President and CEO is appointed or for two weeks, whichever comes first.

According to a notification issued by the Finance Division, the new extension will begin on August 7, 2026. The decision was taken to ensure continuity in the bank’s leadership while the appointment process for the next chief executive is completed.

The government approved the extension under the powers provided by the Banks (Nationalization) Act, 1974. The temporary arrangement will remain in place until the incoming President and CEO officially assumes office.

In a separate notification submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), NBP confirmed that the Government of Pakistan had approved the extension through the Finance Division. The bank also requested the stock exchange to inform all TRE certificate holders about the latest development.

Rehmat Ali Hasnie has been leading the National Bank of Pakistan since August 2023. Before receiving the permanent appointment, he served as Acting President and CEO from May 2022.

Hasnie has a long history with the bank. He joined NBP in 2010 and has held several senior leadership positions during his career. Over the years, he has managed important business areas, including investment banking, corporate banking, and priority sector lending.

His experience in these divisions helped strengthen his role within the bank before becoming its chief executive. His leadership has continued through the latest extension announced by the federal government.

The Finance Division’s notification makes it clear that the extension is temporary. It will automatically end once the newly appointed President and CEO takes charge. If the appointment is delayed, the extension will remain valid only for the approved two-week period.

The latest decision ensures that the bank continues to operate under stable leadership during the transition period. Such interim extensions are commonly used to avoid administrative gaps while the appointment of a new chief executive is finalized.

The National Bank of Pakistan is one of the country’s largest commercial banks and plays an important role in the financial sector. Maintaining uninterrupted leadership is considered important for the bank’s daily operations and strategic decision-making.
