The Punjab government has issued organ transplantation licences to three hospitals across the province. The approvals will allow them to continue specialised transplant services.
The licences were issued under the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority (PHOTA). The authority regulates organ transplantation facilities and helps ensure safe medical practices.
According to the Punjab Health Department, two hospitals have received registration certificates for kidney transplantation. These include the Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases and Saleem Memorial Hospital in Lahore.
Both hospitals have been granted registration certificates valid for three years. The approvals will allow them to provide kidney transplant services during this period.
The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI), Lahore, has also received multiple approvals. The hospital has been granted a three-year certificate for pancreas transplantation.
PKLI has additionally received separate certificates for liver and kidney transplantation. These certificates are valid for six months.
Officials said PHOTA issued the licences after completing inspections. The authority also considered recommendations from its Executive Committee before granting the approvals.
The government said the licensing process is part of efforts to strengthen transplant services in Punjab. It also aims to ensure that patients receive treatment through regulated medical facilities.
Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said the government is strengthening PHOTA. He linked the initiative with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s healthcare vision.
The minister said Punjab is taking steps to expand access to transplant services. He also stressed the importance of safe and regulated treatment for patients.
The latest approvals could support the availability of specialised transplant procedures across the province. They also provide hospitals with formal permission to perform specific transplant operations.
The development comes as authorities continue efforts to improve oversight of organ transplantation. PHOTA Director General Professor Aamir Zaman Khan said the authority is undergoing modernisation.
