Mir Raza Ali’s smartwatch and mobile phone have been handed over to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). His family has requested a detailed forensic examination of the devices.
The development comes as authorities continue investigating the death of Mir Raza Ali. His body was recovered from Gulistan-e-Johar in Karachi.
Jibran Nasir, the lawyer representing Mir Raza’s family, confirmed the development. He said the deceased’s smartwatch and mobile phone were given to the NCCIA.
Family members also met officials from the agency. They requested that the devices be examined by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA).
The family believes a forensic review could help investigators understand important details. It may also provide digital evidence linked to the circumstances surrounding Raza’s death.
The latest development follows concerns about how Raza’s smartwatch was handled during the investigation. Jibran Nasir had raised questions about the device in a statement issued earlier.
Nasir said police requested the smartwatch on the day of Raza’s Soyem. The Soyem is held on the third day after a person’s death.
According to Nasir, SSP Soomro kept the smartwatch in his possession for eight days. He described the device as an important piece of evidence in the case.
The transfer to the NCCIA could allow digital evidence to undergo a more detailed examination. Investigators may examine data stored on both devices as part of the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, further action has also been taken regarding the initial post-mortem examination. Dr Usama, who conducted the examination, has been removed from his position.
He has also been summoned before an inquiry committee. The move comes amid wider concerns about different stages of the investigation.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho had earlier acknowledged shortcomings in the case. He said lapses were identified at several levels during the investigation.
Odho also pointed to concerns involving a medico-legal officer from the provincial health department. He said authorities were taking steps to address the identified issues.
The police chief added that the inquiry remained underway. The investigation is being conducted in light of detailed findings from the medical board.
Initially, police based their investigation on the medico-legal report. The report was prepared after the first post-mortem examination.
The latest forensic request could provide investigators with additional digital evidence. The examination may help clarify events surrounding Mir Raza Ali’s death.
