Rs36 Billion Daducha Dam Project Approved to Boost Rawalpindi Water Supply

Rs36 Billion Daducha Dam Project Approved to Boost Rawalpindi Water Supply

RAWALPINDI: The Provincial Development Working Party has approved a major water supply project for Rawalpindi.

The project has an estimated cost of Rs36 billion. It will provide an additional 35 million gallons daily to Rawalpindi city and the cantonment.

The project is linked to the ongoing construction of Daducha Dam. Authorities plan to transport water from the dam through a new pipeline.

The planned pipeline will cover around 28 kilometres. The project will also include filtration plants and a distribution network.

These facilities will help deliver treated water to different areas of Rawalpindi. The system will serve both the city and cantonment areas.

The project cost will be shared equally between the two areas. Rawalpindi city and the cantonment will each receive an allocation of Rs18 billion.

However, the funding arrangement for the cantonmentโ€™s share is still pending. The Punjab Cabinet will decide whether the federal or provincial government will finance it.

The provincial cabinet will also determine how the additional supply will be divided. The decision will cover both Rawalpindi city and the cantonment.

The project comes as Rawalpindi faces significant water shortages. Residents in several areas have faced difficulties due to limited supply.

Officials expect the new infrastructure to improve the availability of Water across the city. It could also reduce pressure on existing supply systems.

The Punjab Irrigation Department is currently constructing Daducha Dam. The dam is expected to become an important source for Rawalpindiโ€™s future water requirements.

The Water and Sanitation Agency, or WASA, will develop the required supply infrastructure. Its responsibilities will include transporting and distributing water to consumers.

The project will also involve the installation of filtration facilities. These plants will support the treatment process before the supply reaches consumers.

A new distribution network will connect the project infrastructure with targeted areas. This will help improve the delivery system across the city and cantonment.

The additional 35 million gallons per day could provide significant relief to residents. It is expected to strengthen Rawalpindiโ€™s overall water supply capacity.

The project also reflects efforts to address the cityโ€™s growing demand. Population growth and urban expansion have increased pressure on existing resources.

Authorities aim to provide a more reliable supply through the Daducha Dam project. The new infrastructure is expected to support long-term needs.

The Punjab government will make key decisions regarding financing and distribution. These decisions will determine how the project moves forward.

Once completed, the project could play an important role in addressing Rawalpindiโ€™s shortage. It will combine dam storage, filtration, pipelines, and distribution infrastructure.

The approval of the Rs36 billion PC-I marks an important step toward implementation. Further progress will depend on funding and construction arrangements.
