ISLAMABAD: The spillways of Rawal Dam were opened after heavy rainfall caused the reservoir’s water level to rise above the safe limit. Authorities took the step to manage excess water and reduce the risk of flooding.
According to the district administration, the decision was made after the water level at Rawal Dam reached 1,748.30 feet. Officials said the controlled release of water was necessary to maintain the reservoir at a safe operating level.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad directed all relevant departments to stay on high alert. He instructed emergency teams to remain prepared and respond quickly if any situation developed due to the water discharge.
The administration also issued a public advisory for residents. Citizens were urged to avoid visiting streams, drains, low-lying areas, and places near fast-flowing water. Officials said these precautions were necessary to prevent accidents during the water release.
Before opening the spillways, authorities sounded warning sirens in nearby areas. The alerts were issued to inform residents about the planned release of water and allow them enough time to move away from vulnerable locations.
Following the controlled discharge, the water level at Rawal Dam dropped from 1,748.30 feet to 1,747 feet. Officials said the reduction helped ease pressure on the reservoir after the recent rainfall.
A Sub-Divisional Officer confirmed that 6,283 cusecs of water were released through the spillways. The controlled release lowered the water level by around two feet and improved the dam’s storage capacity.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) informed all concerned departments before the spillways were opened. This coordination allowed emergency agencies to prepare in advance and monitor the situation closely.
Officials said all departments remained in contact throughout the operation. Teams were deployed to observe water flow and ensure public safety in nearby areas.
Heavy monsoon rains have increased water levels in several rivers and reservoirs across the country. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and water storage levels to reduce the risk of flooding.
The district administration has advised residents to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary travel near water channels. People living close to streams and drains have also been asked to remain cautious.
