US President Donald Trump says major progress has been made toward establishing a US military base in Poland.
Trump made the remarks on Thursday through a social media post. He linked the development to Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s leadership.
According to Trump, talks between Washington and Warsaw have moved forward. He said the location of a potential US Army base could be announced soon.
Trump described the proposed base as a historic development for the US-Poland alliance. He said major progress was being made on the plan.
The announcement comes as Washington reviews its military presence across Europe. The review has raised concerns among some European allies about possible troop reductions.
Poland, however, is seeking to strengthen its military cooperation with the United States. The country shares borders with both Ukraine and Russia.
Poland is located on NATO’s eastern flank. It has also increased defense spending to around five percent of its gross domestic product.
Nawrocki welcomed the latest development. He said Poland was prepared to continue efforts to strengthen defense cooperation with Washington.
The Polish president also said his government would work to identify a suitable location. He stressed that the process would be handled seriously and responsibly.
Nawrocki has maintained close ties with Trump. He visited the White House last year during discussions about US military support for Poland.
During that visit, Trump offered to send additional American troops to Poland. The two countries have continued discussions over strengthening their defense partnership.
Polish Deputy Defence Minister Pawel Zalewski confirmed earlier that talks were underway. He said Warsaw was discussing the possibility of a permanent US base.
Zalewski said the initial stage of the process had already been completed. He also pointed to political support for expanding the US military presence.
Nearly 10,000 American troops are currently stationed in Poland. Most of them are deployed on a rotational basis rather than permanently.
The proposed base would represent a further expansion of the US military presence. However, no final location has been publicly announced.
The issue comes amid wider debate about America’s military role in Europe. The Trump administration has launched a formal review of US forces on the continent.
Washington has also criticized some European countries over military cooperation. The dispute followed concerns about access to NATO bases during the war with Iran.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also raised concerns about alliance spending. He previously warned of possible consequences for countries that fail to meet commitments.
At the NATO summit in The Hague, members agreed to increase security spending by 2035. The target includes five percent of GDP for defense and security-related spending.
Of that total, 3.5 percent is intended for core military expenditure. The remaining share covers broader security-related investments.
The latest US-Poland discussions are therefore taking place amid wider changes within NATO. Poland continues to seek stronger American security commitments.
Trump’s statement indicates major progress in discussions over the proposed base. However, further negotiations will be needed before any final agreement.
For now, both governments have confirmed their interest in expanding defense cooperation. The location and details of a permanent US base remain subject to further talks.
