A 25-year-old Pakistani student has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the United Kingdom. Fazli Qadeer was convicted of raping a vulnerable, bedbound elderly woman in Bristol.

The Pakistani student was living in the UK on a student visa. He was also working as a care worker while studying in Bristol. The case was heard at Bristol Crown Court.

According to court reports, Qadeer attended the woman’s home during a care shift. He knew her family members would be away at the time.

The court heard that Qadeer approached the woman while she was in bed. He told her that he loved her and wanted to marry her.

He then subjected the woman to a sustained sexual assault. The victim was described in court as extremely vulnerable.

Qadeer denied the rape allegations during the trial. He also claimed that the woman had sexually assaulted him.

A jury rejected his account and found him guilty of rape. He was later sentenced to 12 years in prison by Bristol Crown Court.

During sentencing, Recorder Sarah Regan addressed Qadeer’s actions. She said his motive was difficult to understand. She said it appeared he committed the crime because he believed he could.

The court also heard about the impact of the attack on the victim. She has reported severe nightmares and serious sleep problems since the incident.

The woman also described experiencing fear and anxiety following the attack. Her victim impact statement was presented during the sentencing hearing.

The court imposed a restraining order against Qadeer. The order prevents him from contacting the victim.

Qadeer’s defence also presented information about his background. His lawyer referred to his upbringing and previous charitable activities.

The Pakistani student had reportedly moved to Bristol after coming to the UK to study. He worked in the care sector alongside his studies.

Following the prison sentence, the UK’s Home Office will review Qadeer’s immigration status. Any decision regarding his immigration position will follow that review.
