KARACHI: The extension of the Karachi Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is expected to be completed during the fiscal year 2026-27. Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi announced the timeline during a visit to the construction site.

The extension will connect Numaish Chowrangi with Municipal Park near Jama Cloth Market. The proposed route covers approximately 1.8 kilometers.

During his surprise visit on Saturday, Hashmi directed officials to speed up construction work. He stressed the importance of completing the project promptly so residents could benefit from improved transport facilities.

The governor also confirmed that the federal government had released its allocated share of funding. This development is expected to support the ongoing construction work.

Karachi Green Line Extension Work Underway

Authorities are constructing stations along the 1.8-kilometer extension route. The project aims to expand the existing transport network and improve connectivity for commuters in central Karachi.

The extension from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park will provide access to another important area of the city. Residents and daily commuters are expected to benefit from better public transport connections once the project becomes operational.

However, the extension’s completion will depend on construction progress and the timely execution of the remaining work. The governor has urged the relevant authorities to accelerate their efforts.

The project forms part of broader efforts to improve public transportation in Karachi. The city continues to face significant commuting challenges due to its large population and growing transport needs.

Governor Highlights Importance of Green Line Project

During his visit, Hashmi described the Karachi Green Line as an important public transportation project. He said the service had significantly improved commuting facilities for residents.

The governor also acknowledged the role of former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in initiating the project. He said the initiative was part of a broader vision for developing a modern mass transit system in Karachi.

The Green Line BRT project is intended to provide an organised public transport option for daily commuters. Its expansion is expected to improve access to the existing network.

Federal Government Reaffirms Support for Karachi

Hashmi stressed that Karachi still requires major infrastructure projects and improved commuting facilities. He highlighted the importance of continued investment in the city’s transport network.

The governor also referred to the 18th Constitutional Amendment. He noted that the amendment had limited the federal government’s direct role in certain development projects.

Despite these limitations, Hashmi assured residents that the federal government would continue supporting Karachi’s development. He emphasised the need for cooperation to address the city’s infrastructure requirements.

The planned Karachi Green Line extension is expected to contribute to these efforts. Its completion during the 2026-27 fiscal year would expand the existing BRT network.
