DOHA: Qatar will soon announce a new defence production hub to strengthen its military capabilities. The initiative will focus on improving protection against missiles, drones, and cyberattacks.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Defence Affairs, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, shared the development on Monday. He spoke at the Global Security Forum in Doha amid rising tensions across the Middle East.
Al Thani said Qatar was working with regional partners to establish the new defence initiative. The country is also cooperating with international partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
The proposed partnership aims to strengthen Qatar’s ability to protect its territory. It will also support investments in defence companies and help develop local security capabilities.
Qatar Plans to Strengthen Defence Capabilities
Speaking about the initiative, Al Thani highlighted plans to work with regional and international partners. He said the upcoming partnership would focus on developing capabilities against several security threats.
These threats include ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cyberattacks. However, the minister did not disclose further details about the planned partnership.
The announcement comes as Gulf countries face growing security concerns. Recent regional hostilities have increased the risks associated with missile attacks and disruptions to critical infrastructure.
The initiative could mark an important step in Qatar’s defence strategy. The country has traditionally depended on advanced foreign military equipment and external security partnerships.
Unlike some other countries, Qatar has not developed a large-scale domestic defence production sector. Its security approach has largely focused on purchasing sophisticated weapons from international suppliers.
The proposed hub could help the country gradually build its local defence industry. However, officials have yet to announce its expected investment, production capacity, or operational timeline.
Regional Conflict Affects Qatar’s Energy Sector
The ongoing conflict involving Iran has also affected Qatar’s energy industry. The country was forced to shut down much of its main liquefied natural gas facility at Ras Laffan after hostilities began.
Qatar is one of the world’s major liquefied natural gas exporters. Disruptions to its energy infrastructure could affect production and international energy supplies.
Restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have created additional challenges. The strategic waterway plays a major role in transporting energy supplies from the Gulf region.
These developments have highlighted the importance of protecting critical infrastructure. They have also increased the need for stronger regional security cooperation.
Qatar’s planned defence production hub could support its long-term security objectives. The initiative may also help reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers over time.
