ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Apple is reportedly exploring a large foldable tablet with a display measuring between 18 and 20 inches when fully opened. The device could bring tablet and laptop-style computing closer together by offering a larger workspace in a foldable design.

According to recent reports citing Chinese technology tipster Kang, Apple is testing a large folding device that could provide an expansive screen while remaining more compact when folded. Apple has not officially confirmed the project, its specifications or a release date.

If launched, the rumored device could become one of the largest tablets in Apple’s lineup. Its flexible display may provide additional space for multitasking, professional applications, video editing and other activities that benefit from a larger screen.

The project could also introduce a different approach to portable computing, allowing users to carry a large display in a device that folds into a smaller form.

The rumored foldable iPad is expected to feature a flexible screen that opens to approximately the size of two conventional tablets placed side by side. Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has previously reported on Apple’s work on a large foldable device, with reducing the visible crease reportedly among the company’s design goals.

A less noticeable crease could create a more seamless viewing experience when the device is fully open. However, Apple has not confirmed whether it has solved this technical challenge or finalized the display design.

The final product could sit between a conventional iPad and a laptop. Its success would depend not only on screen size but also on weight, hinge durability, software and overall usability.

Apple is also reportedly considering ultra-thin glass (UTG) for the cover layer of its future foldable display. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously linked the company’s foldable-device plans with this technology. Reports have also identified Corning as a potential glass-material supplier, while General Interface Solutions (GIS) has reportedly been linked to processing and inspection work. Apple has not officially confirmed these supplier arrangements.

Ultra-thin glass is designed to provide a glass-like surface while allowing a display to bend. For a large foldable tablet, durability and crease reduction would be particularly important because the screen would need to withstand repeated opening and closing.

Manufacturing a flexible display of this size could also create challenges involving production costs, weight and long-term reliability.

Huawei’s MateBook Fold provides an example of how a large folding display can combine a portable design with laptop-style functionality. The 2026 MateBook Fold features an 18-inch dual-layer OLED display and a Kirin X90 Plus processor. It folds into a footprint similar to a conventional 13-inch laptop and supports a stylus for productivity tasks.

Apple’s rumored device could appeal to users who want a large workspace without carrying a full-sized laptop and a separate tablet. However, there is no confirmed evidence that Apple will copy Huawei’s design or adopt the same hardware approach. The two companies could use different display technologies, hinges and software systems.

Earlier reports and analyst predictions have pointed to 2028 as a possible launch window for Apple’s large foldable device. Other reports suggest development could extend into 2029. Its final positioning also remains uncertain, as Apple could market it primarily as a tablet, a laptop alternative or a hybrid device.

Apple has not announced a release date or revealed the expected price, processor, battery capacity, operating system or accessory support. Any current estimates about these specifications should therefore be treated as speculation.

An 18- to 20-inch foldable iPad could provide more room for creative work, document editing, presentations and multitasking. Professionals might be able to view multiple documents or applications side by side, while students could benefit from a larger workspace for reading, note-taking and research.

However, a bigger screen does not automatically guarantee a better user experience. Apple would need to balance portability, battery life, durability and price while adapting its software to the folding design. The operating system will also be important in determining whether the device functions mainly as a tablet or offers a more laptop-like computing experience.
