WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has recently introduced a significant modification affecting Android users and their access to free storage space on Google Drive. Previously, users enjoyed the privilege of storing their chat history, photos, and videos on Google Drive without incurring any charges. However, a paradigm shift now requires users to make a pivotal decision: either opt for a Google One membership or risk having their WhatsApp data encroach upon the 15GB storage limit allocated on Google Drive.
This transformative adjustment was elucidated by Google in a communication posted in November. It elucidated that WhatsApp backups on Android devices would henceforth consume space in the user’s Google Account cloud storage. The commencement of this change was initiated with WhatsApp Beta users in December 2023, with plans to roll it out to all WhatsApp users on Android in the early months of 2024.

WhatsApp, cognizant of the impact on users, has pledged to provide a 30-day notice before the implementation of these alterations. Users can access this information within the WhatsApp application by navigating to Settings > Chats > Chat backup. The complete deployment of these modifications is anticipated to reach all users throughout the course of 2024.
For users enrolled in the WhatsApp Beta app, a preemptive message has already been disseminated, forewarning them with the statement, “Backups will start using your Google storage in the next few months.” While obtaining a Google One subscription emerges as a viable solution for those surpassing the 15GB limit, it is noteworthy that the company still facilitates data transfer between Android devices, thereby offering a practical avenue for users to manage their data in the midst of these transformative changes.
