China’s Yungang Buddhist Grottoes, boasting 51,000 statues carved into 252 caves and niches over 1,500 years ago, is undeniably a remarkable attraction.
However, the site’s restrooms have recently garnered more attention than its ancient marvels. A video circulating on Chinese news and social media platforms reveals Toilet timers installed above in a female washroom. Each stall features a digital counter indicating whether it’s vacant (“empty” in green) or in use (displaying the duration the door has been locked in minutes and seconds).

The original video, reportedly captured by a visitor and shared with the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, sparked mixed reactions. One visitor commented on the technological advancement, noting it eliminates the need to queue or knock on bathroom doors. Yet, some found it disconcerting, feeling monitored while using the facilities.
According to a staff member from the attraction interviewed by the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, the timers were implemented to manage increased visitor numbers, including restroom usage within the tourist site. The staff member clarified that the timers are not intended to enforce strict time limits on restroom use. They emphasized that visitors will not be forced to leave mid-use and assured that no specific time limits, such as five or ten minutes, have been set for using the facilities.
