US tropical Storm Debby Now Classified as a Tropical Depression

Tropical Storm Debby was downgraded to a tropical depression on Thursday after causing at least seven deaths in the US Southeast. The storm is moving northward toward Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York, where it may trigger tornadoes and further flash flooding, according to forecasts. The National Weather Service warned that Debby would continue to weaken through Sunday, but heavy rain and flooding effects would persist for the next two days.

Debby made a second landfall near Bulls Bay, South Carolina, on Thursday, following its earlier strike on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The storm could still produce tornadoes in North Carolina and Virginia, and parts of South Carolina might receive additional rain. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster cautioned residents about ongoing flood risks, while power outages affected over 45,000 customers in North Carolina and Virginia. In Georgia, flooding from the storm caused the failure of four dams, prompting evacuations.
