361 Students Released in Rawalpindi Following Protests Over Alleged Rape Incident

Authorities in Rawalpindi have released 361 students who were arrested during protests regarding the alleged rape of a first-year student at a college in Lahore. The students had gathered to express their outrage over the incident, leading to widespread demonstrations that sometimes turned violent.

The protests began after reports surfaced about the alleged assault, prompting police to arrest 387 students on Thursday. While 14 students were granted bail by a district court, three were remanded for further investigation. The court questioned the justification for the mass arrests and ordered the release of all other detainees, urging students to focus on their education.

The protests were sparked by claims that a security guard at a Lahore college had raped a student on October 11. The incident reportedly came to light when a lecturer noticed the victim’s absence, prompting her friends and family to disclose the alleged assault. Demonstrations erupted across various college campuses as students accused the administration of attempting to cover up the incident by deleting CCTV footage and suppressing protests violently.

Despite the uproar, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has labeled the claims surrounding the rape case as fabricated, further complicating the already tense situation. The protests reflect a growing demand for accountability and justice in the face of serious allegations against educational institutions.
