The Pakistani Ministry of Interior has deployed the Pakistan Army in Islamabad under Article 245 of the Constitution to address escalating security concerns following protests organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Violent clashes between PTI supporters and security forces have resulted in casualties, including the deaths of four Rangers personnel and two policemen, after protesters rammed a vehicle into security forces.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned the PTI against continuing their march to Islamabad’s D-Chowk, advising them to stage their protest at an alternative location, Sangjani, to avoid a confrontation in the capital’s sensitive Red Zone. He emphasized that the government would take extreme measures, including curfews and invoking the army’s authority, if the protests cross into restricted areas.
The clashes have also led to the imposition of Section 144, banning public gatherings, and the suspension of internet services in certain areas. Despite the restrictions, PTI supporters have continued their march, demanding the release of Imran Khan and other political prisoners, as well as the restoration of democracy. As tensions escalate, PTI leaders have urged their followers to remain steadfast, with no intention of backing down until their demands are met. Several PTI leaders have also been arrested for violating the imposed restrictions.
