Pakistan's IT Industry Loses $910,000 Per Hour Due to Internet Shutdowns

The Senate’s Standing Committee on IT and Telecom, led by Senator Palwasha Khan, gathered today to address key issues affecting the industry.

During the meeting, Pasha Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed expressed strong concerns about the government’s VPN policy, emphasizing its negative effects on the IT sector.

He pointed out that every hour of internet downtime results in a loss of $910,000 for the industry, underscoring the importance of stable internet access for its growth.

Senator Palwasha Khan criticized the Ministry of IT for frequently shifting responsibility to the Ministry of Interior, questioning the purpose of having a Ministry of IT if this approach continues.

The Secretary of IT assured the committee that efforts are in progress to balance national security concerns while minimizing the impact on the IT sector.

The discussion stressed the need for a more strategic policy approach to ensure both national security and the continued growth of Pakistan’s IT industry.
