Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmady was taken into custody after a virtual concert on YouTube without wearing a hijab, defying Iran’s strict morality laws. The 27-year-old, arrested in Mazandaran province, gained over 1.4 million views on her performance despite the platform being restricted in Iran.

Ahmady’s lawyer revealed uncertainty about her charges or whereabouts, while two of her band members were also detained in Tehran. Iranian authorities plan to open a trial against her for violating morality laws, which ban women from singing in public or performing without the hijab.

The arrest highlights escalating crackdowns on women challenging Iran’s dress codes and follows protests sparked by the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman detained by the morality police.
