Zakir Hussain, the renowned Indian tabla virtuoso, passed away today at the age of 73 in a San Francisco hospital due to complications from heart issues. His manager, Nirmala Bachani, confirmed he had been hospitalized previously. A trailblazer in the world of tabla, Zakir’s innovative artistry earned him worldwide recognition.

The New York Times, in a 2009 review of his Carnegie Hall performance, praised Zakir as a North Indian tabla player whose “fearsome technique” combined with whimsical creativity, creating music that was both intricate and joyful. His rapid finger movements were compared to the wings of a hummingbird, producing complex yet playful sounds.
