13 Dead as Indian Navy Speedboat Collides with Mumbai Ferry

A tragic collision between an Indian Navy speedboat and a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday has resulted in at least 13 deaths. The ferry, carrying over 100 passengers, capsized following the impact, with 99 people rescued so far. The accident occurred in Mumbai Harbour when the naval vessel, undergoing engine trials, lost control due to a malfunction and crashed into the Neelkamal ferry.

Eyewitnesses aboard the ferry recalled the terrifying moment when the speedboat hit their vessel. One passenger described the sudden rush of water as the ferry overturned, with the crew urging passengers to put on lifejackets. Many, including naval personnel and civilians from both vessels, have been injured and are receiving medical treatment.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow, calling the loss of life devastating, and Maharashtra’s Chief Minister announced a ₹500,000 ex-gratia payment for the deceased’s families. The ferry, which was on its way to Elephanta Island, is a popular tourist route to the UNESCO-listed Elephanta caves.

Authorities are continuing their search and investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
