Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced plans to provide free electric scooters to female students and working women. Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has given in-principle approval for the initiative.
The Electric Scooter Program will initially be introduced in Peshawar.
Female students and working women will be the first groups eligible under the initiative.
According to officials, recipients will be selected through a computerized ballot.
Electric Scooter Program to Start in Peshawar
The provincial government plans to begin the scheme in Peshawar before expanding it to other districts. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi chaired a meeting to review the program and its implementation.
During the meeting, he directed authorities to begin the scooter distribution process without unnecessary delays.
He also instructed officials to ensure full funding for the initiative. The government has not yet announced the number of scooters to be distributed.
Detailed eligibility requirements and the application process have also not been disclosed yet.
Committees to Oversee Scooter Distribution
The chief minister ordered the immediate formation of several committees for the program. These include a steering committee and a technical working group.
A grievance redressal committee will also be established to address complaints and concerns.
The committees will oversee different aspects of the scheme and help manage its implementation. A computerized ballot will determine which eligible applicants receive free scooters.
This system is expected to manage the selection process once applications are opened.
Officials said the Electric Scooter Program will later be extended beyond Peshawar.
However, a timeline for expansion to other Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts was not announced.
Program Targets Education and Employment Access
The provincial government says the initiative is designed to improve mobility for women. Sohail Afridi said easier transportation could help women access educational institutions and workplaces.
The government also expects the initiative to support women’s economic independence. Transportation can be an important consideration for students and employees travelling regularly within cities.
The scooters are expected to provide another mobility option for eligible women in Peshawar.
Electric Scooters Could Support Cleaner Transport
The government has also highlighted the environmental aspect of the initiative. Electric scooters do not produce direct exhaust emissions while being driven.
The chief minister said their use could contribute to efforts aimed at reducing air pollution.
The Electric Scooter Program therefore combines mobility support with the promotion of environmentally friendly transportation.
