Saudi Arabia Pledges Safety for LGBTQ Supporters at 2034 FIFA World Cup

The English Football Association (FA) has explained its decision to support Saudi Arabia as the host of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, citing assurances from the Gulf nation that LGBTQ+ fans will be “safe and welcome.”

This statement followed FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s announcement on December 11, confirming Saudi Arabia as the tournament’s host.

FA Chair Debbie Hewitt told BBC Radio 5 Live that the decision came after a thorough evaluation process. The FA held detailed discussions with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) in November, requesting commitments to ensure the safety and inclusivity of all fans, including LGBTQ+ individuals, during the event.

Hewitt stated that Saudi officials provided comprehensive assurances and emphasized a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all attendees. The FA plans to collaborate with Saudi Arabia over the next decade to ensure these promises are upheld.

The 2034 World Cup will be the second hosted in the Middle East, following Qatar’s 2022 event. It will also be the first tournament with 48 teams hosted by a single nation, set to take place across 15 stadiums in Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha, and NEOM.

Saudi Arabia plans to build 10 new stadiums, including the 92,000-seat King Salman Stadium in Riyadh, designated for the opening and final matches.
