The first full moon of 2025, known as the “Wolf Moon,” will light up the night skies tonight, January 13.
Why the Name?
Traditionally, the Wolf Moon is named after the winter nights when wolves are believed to howl more frequently. However, experts clarify that the howling is a way for wolves to locate pack members and strengthen bonds, not a direct response to the moon.

When to Watch
The Wolf Moon reaches peak brightness at 5:27 p.m. EST but will appear full from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning. Look toward the eastern horizon at sunset for the best view, as it ascends high by midnight and sets at sunrise.
A Rare Celestial Sight
Tonight’s Wolf Moon will also pass in front of Mars, a treat visible across most of the continental U.S., according to NASA.
Next in the Lunar Cycle
Following the Wolf Moon, the next full moon—February’s “Snow Moon”—will rise on February 12.
