Bangladesh Files Corruption Cases Against Sheikh Hasina and Family

Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed cases against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members, accusing them of large-scale land grabbing in a suburb of Dhaka. The cases, according to ACC Director General Akhter Hossain, involve Hasina’s alleged allocation of lucrative plots for herself and her relatives.

The case names several prominent figures, including Hasina’s niece, British anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq, and her daughter, Saima Wazed, who is the World Health Organization’s South East Asia chief. Siddiq has denied the allegations, while there was no immediate response from Wazed. The ACC claims to have gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with the cases.

Additionally, the ACC is investigating alleged embezzlement by Hasina’s family related to the $5 billion kickback from the Russian-funded Rooppur nuclear power plant project. The plant, which costs $12.65 billion, is financed largely by a loan from Moscow.

Hasina, who fled Bangladesh for India in August 2024 amid a revolution, faces multiple charges, including mass murder. The cases against her family are part of broader investigations into corruption during her rule.
