VPN users and those relying on AI-powered tools are particularly at risk, as hackers are injecting malicious code into these legitimate extensions. Among the compromised extensions are well-known tools such as AI Assistant – ChatGPT, Bard AI Chat Extension, VPNCity, and VidHelper Video Downloader.

To protect their privacy, the NTISB recommends users:

  • Avoid using the affected extensions and seek trusted alternatives.
  • Only install browser extensions from reputable sources.
  • Regularly update extensions and remove any unused ones.
  • Use up-to-date antivirus software and monitor system activity for unusual behavior.

The board urges users to act swiftly to safeguard their data from growing cyber threats.
