Tragedy at Mayo Hospital: 2 Dead, 15 ill After Reaction to Ceftriaxone Injection

Two patients reportedly lost their lives, while 15 others fell ill due to a severe reaction to an injection at the chest ward of Mayo Hospital in Lahore.

According to hospital administration, the reaction occurred after patients were administered the Ceftriaxone injection. Among the deceased was 36-year-old Noreen, along with another patient. Of the 15 affected, three remain in critical condition on ventilators.

Following the incident, hospital authorities immediately halted the use of the injection and initiated an inquiry, appointing Professor Dr. Asrarul Haq Tur as the head of the investigation committee.

Mayo Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Muhammad Haroon Hamedd, assured that legal action will be taken against those found responsible.

Reports indicate that medications were recently procured without undergoing proper lab testing. These untested drugs were being administered without prior patient screening, raising serious safety concerns.

The tragedy occurred just days after the Punjab Chief Minister’s visit to Mayo Hospital, during which he received patient complaints and ordered the immediate removal of the Medical Superintendent (MS).
