Russia's Demands Signal New Diplomatic Push Amid Ukraine War

Russia has reportedly presented a list of demands to the United States as part of a potential agreement to end the war in Ukraine and reset its relationship with Washington. While the exact details of the demands remain unclear, sources familiar with the discussions suggest that Moscow’s conditions are reminiscent of its long-standing concerns, including Ukraine’s NATO membership and the recognition of territories under Russian control.

The talks, which have reportedly occurred both in person and virtually over the last three weeks, are still ongoing. While the Kremlin’s demands seem to echo its earlier proposals to Ukraine, the U.S., and NATO, it remains uncertain if Russia is willing to negotiate with Ukraine before these terms are met.

One key demand involves a guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO, a point Moscow has repeatedly raised. Russia also insists on the withdrawal of foreign troops from Ukrainian soil and demands international recognition of Crimea and other occupied regions as Russian territory. The issue of NATO’s eastward expansion continues to be a central concern for Moscow in its discussions with the West.

Meanwhile, the possibility of a 30-day ceasefire proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump remains in limbo as Russian President Vladimir Putin has yet to confirm his position. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed tentative support for the ceasefire, viewing it as a potential starting point for broader peace negotiations, though experts warn it could be a strategy for Russia to consolidate its position.
