WhatsApp to Limit Broadcast Messages to Combat Spam

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, has announced new restrictions on broadcast messaging aimed at curbing the growing issue of spam. In the coming weeks, individual users will face limits on the number of broadcast messages they can send, as the platform seeks to improve the overall user experience.

The changes will be rolled out during a testing phase, where individual users will be limited to sending a maximum of 30 broadcast messages per month. Meta encourages users who need to communicate more frequently to utilize status updates or channels as alternatives to broadcast messages.

In response to rising concerns about spam, Meta is also considering implementing similar restrictions for business accounts.

Changes for Business Accounts

While business accounts currently have no restrictions on broadcast messages, Meta is planning to introduce paid versions with added features. Businesses will be allowed to send up to 250 broadcast messages for free during the testing period, after which they will need to pay to send additional messages.

Meta also intends to offer customisable tools and scheduling options for business broadcast messages, as part of broader changes aimed at enhancing the WhatsApp Business app. These updates are expected to roll out over the next few months, alongside a new logo for the WhatsApp Business app.
