Carney's Liberals Triumph in Canada Election, Prepare to Form Minority Government

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party emerged victorious in Canada’s national election, securing a stunning political comeback amidst rising tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump.

The final results, announced on Monday night, confirmed that the Liberals had won the most seats in Canada’s 343-seat parliament. However, it remained uncertain whether Carney would be able to form a majority government or would rely on support from smaller parties.

The win marked a remarkable turnaround for the Liberals, who had trailed the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, by more than 20 points in opinion polls earlier this year. Conservative hopes to capitalize on public discontent with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faltered as a surge in nationalistic sentiment—sparked by Trump’s return to the White House and his antagonistic rhetoric towards Canada—boosted the Liberals.

Throughout the campaign, Carney, a former central bank governor, framed the election as a fight for Canadian sovereignty. “Donald Trump wants to break us so America can own us,” Carney said at a rally. “They want our resources, our water, our land, our country. They can’t have it.”

Despite Trump’s provocations, including a post on Truth Social urging Canadians to elect a leader who could slash taxes and suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, the Liberals managed to consolidate support. Their message of defending Canadian identity and economic independence resonated deeply with voters.

A key moment of the night came when Liberal candidate Leslie Stewart reclaimed Toronto-St. Paul’s, a seat that had been lost to the Conservatives in a 2024 by-election. This victory signaled a return to Liberal dominance in the riding.

As results were revealed, celebrations erupted at Liberal party headquarters across Canada, with supporters hailing the win as a triumph for Canadian sovereignty and the nation’s future.
