Scientists Warn of H5N1 Bird Flu Threat, Urge Pandemic Preparedness

In a joint statement published in The Lancet Regional Health–Americas, over 40 virologists from the Global Virus Network (GVN) issued a stark warning about the growing global threat posed by the H5N1 bird flu virus, urging immediate action from world leaders to prevent a potential pandemic.

The scientists emphasized the need for enhanced surveillance, stronger biosecurity measures, and preparation for the possibility of human-to-human transmission. They pointed to sporadic cases of human infections in the U.S. with no known contact with animals, suggesting that the virus may be adapting.

The H5N1 virus, which has been spreading rapidly among wild birds and poultry in North America, is responsible for the deaths or culling of over 168 million poultry in the U.S. since 2022. At least 70 people have been infected, with one confirmed death.

The GVN researchers warned that genetic mutations could make the virus more transmissible and stressed the need for early intervention. They advocated for better monitoring of animal products and wastewater, quicker sharing of genomic data, and the development of rapid self-diagnostic tests and vaccines. Additionally, they called for increased funding for clinical trials and improved trust within farm communities to ensure effective response measures.

Experts concluded that a strong nationwide monitoring system is crucial for quickly identifying and containing outbreaks, while also urging heightened global collaboration and vigilance in the face of this growing threat.
