Iran and European Powers Set for Talks in Istanbul Ahead of Key Negotiations

Iran will engage in talks with European powers in Istanbul on Friday regarding the 2015 nuclear deal, as both sides prepare for the upcoming fifth round of U.S.-Iranian negotiations. The discussions, scheduled among senior diplomats, come at a critical time when tensions are high and the future of the nuclear deal hangs in the balance.

Initially, talks planned for May 2 were postponed due to concerns from Britain, France, and Germany—the E3—about creating a parallel negotiation track that could undermine U.S.-led talks. However, they ultimately decided to proceed, recognizing the importance of keeping dialogue open with Iran and reaffirming their vision for a new nuclear agreement.

For Iran, these talks represent an opportunity to assess where the European powers stand on key issues, particularly the reimposition of U.N. sanctions. Iran’s foreign minister has strongly warned against such actions, and maintaining communication with the E3 is seen as essential for Tehran to navigate the complex diplomatic landscape.

As the relationship between the E3 and Iran has deteriorated over the past year, largely due to sanctions on Tehran’s missile program and its ties to Russia, the upcoming negotiations may be crucial. European powers are considering whether to trigger a “snapback” of U.N. sanctions by August if a significant deal remains elusive.

The situation remains fluid as Iran and the U.S. prepare for another round of talks, with the hopes of reaching an agreement that will prevent further escalation over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.
