Govt made call to promote Gen Asim Munir: PM Shehbaz

Gen Asim Munir

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified on Wednesday that the decision to promote Army Chief Gen Asim Munir to field marshal was made by the civilian government in consultation with Nawaz Sharif — not by the military.

Speaking to senior journalists in Islamabad, the PM also confirmed progress in backchannel talks between Pakistan and India, revealing that their DGMOs had agreed to a peacetime posture after India’s request for a ceasefire. Talks between national security advisers are expected soon, with Pakistan raising concerns over Kashmir, water, trade, and terrorism.

He accused Indian intelligence agencies of backing the banned BLA and said Israeli weapons were used in recent clashes, with support from military advisers. “We have solid evidence, which we’ll present to the international community,” he asserted.

Shehbaz also credited China, Turkey, and the US for playing key roles in brokering peace.

Later that evening, the PM and Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Quetta after a tragic terrorist attack in Khuzdar. A ceremony planned in Islamabad to honour the field marshal was postponed at Munir’s request.
