Australia’s Glenn Maxwell Announces ODI Cricket Retirement

Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, closing a significant chapter marked by his vital contributions to two World Cup triumphs.

At 36, Maxwell will continue to represent Australia in T20 internationals, with his focus set on the 2026 T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka.

Since debuting against Afghanistan in 2012, Maxwell featured in 149 ODIs, amassing 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and boasting a remarkable strike rate of 126.70—ranking as the second-highest in ODI history. Among his highlights are four centuries, including a memorable unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, widely hailed as one of the greatest ODI innings ever played.

Besides his powerful batting, Maxwell took 77 wickets with his off-spin and was a brilliant fielder, securing 91 catches over his ODI career.

Injuries have increasingly hampered Maxwell in recent years, leading to his decision to concentrate on the shorter T20 format.

“I felt I was holding the team back because of how my body was responding,” Maxwell shared on the Final Word Podcast. “After a good conversation with George Bailey, I realized I wouldn’t be able to make it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to step up and claim that spot.”

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg lauded Maxwell as “one of the most electrifying and impactful” ODI players ever, noting that “Glenn’s explosive batting thrilled crowds and inspired countless fans.”

Selectors Chair George Bailey also praised Maxwell, saying, “He will be remembered as one of the sport’s most dynamic talents, with extraordinary natural ability, outstanding fielding, and immense dedication to Australia.”

While Maxwell’s retirement signals the end of a remarkable era in Australian ODI cricket, supporters can still anticipate his thrilling performances in the T20 format.
