Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy on Tuesday, putting an end to a 17-season wait with a dramatic six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
Batting first, RCB posted a modest total of 190-9, with Virat Kohli anchoring the innings with a composed 43. Despite the lack of big partnerships and a sluggish finish, their bowling unit rose to the occasion to defend the target in thrilling fashion.

Punjab’s chase got off to a promising start, but key wickets at crucial moments turned the tide. Krunal Pandya’s double strikes and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s match-turning over, which claimed two wickets, halted Punjab’s momentum. Shashank Singh fought valiantly with an unbeaten 61 off 30 balls but couldn’t carry his side over the line.
Kohli, RCB’s long-time talisman, was visibly emotional as the final moments unfolded, shedding tears as his team finally shed the ‘underachievers’ tag that had haunted them since the IPL’s inception in 2008.
