Indian actress Fatima Sana Shaikh has once again brought attention to the unjust treatment of supporting actors in Bollywood, shedding light on the persistent issues of nepotism and inequality within the industry.
In a recent interview, the Dangal star candidly discussed the entrenched power dynamics on film sets, revealing that actors who are not in lead roles or lack industry connections are frequently made to feel inferior. “If you’re not the main lead, you’re often treated like a second-class human being,” Fatima said, emphasizing how character actors are frequently sidelined despite their vital contributions.

Reflecting on her own journey, Fatima acknowledged that her experiences in smaller roles have exposed her to the clear disparities in how actors are treated. “There’s a stark difference — it’s very real. Nepotism is at the core of how this industry functions,” she stated.
She stressed the importance of treating all actors with dignity, regardless of their position or popularity. “When I see a newcomer on set, I make a conscious effort to be respectful. I know how it feels to be looked down upon, and I don’t want others to feel that way.”
During the lighter portion of the interview, Fatima was asked if she had ever faced inappropriate behavior from co-stars. While she said no one had directly insulted her, she admitted to working with actors who constantly tried to steal the spotlight. “Some people want to dominate every scene — even when it’s not about them. It drains the energy out of the moment and impacts everyone else’s performance,” she explained.
She further added that such conduct not only disrupts professionalism but also discourages fellow actors who are trying to build their characters with sincerity. “It’s frustrating. You need to know when to step back and let others shine.”
From Child Star to Acclaimed Actress
Fatima began her acting career as a child artist with appearances in films like Ishq and Chachi 420. She made her leading debut with Tihaan in 2008, but it was her portrayal of Geeta Phogat in the 2016 blockbuster Dangal that brought her widespread recognition. Starring alongside Aamir Khan, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, and the late Suhani Bhatnagar, her performance received critical acclaim.
Fatima now looks ahead to a busy slate of upcoming films, including Metro In Dino, Gustaakh Ishq, and Aap Jesa Koi Nahi, continuing to carve her path in an industry she is determined to see change.
