Pakistan’s Rice Exports Dip 11.7% Despite Modest Rise in Basmati Sales

Pakistan’s rice exports declined by 11.71% during the first 11 months of the 2024-25 fiscal year, reflecting a notable reduction in overall export earnings from the sector, according to the latest data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

From July to May, the country exported 5.544 million metric tons of rice worth $3.203 billion — down from 5.593 million metric tons valued at $3.628 billion during the same period last year.

Interestingly, despite the overall downturn, Basmati rice exports recorded a modest increase of 1.03%. Exporters shipped 761,702 metric tons of Basmati rice worth $781.93 million, compared to 679,100 metric tons valued at $773.98 million during the previous fiscal period.

In contrast, non-Basmati rice exports experienced a significant decline. Pakistan earned $2.441 billion from the export of 4.783 million metric tons of non-Basmati rice, as opposed to $2.854 billion last year.

Meanwhile, total food commodity exports during the 11-month period reached $6.748 billion, slightly lower than the $6.825 billion recorded in the same period of FY2023-24.
