Gwadar Port Expansion Plan Aims to Boost Regional Trade and Connectivity

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has announced a comprehensive plan to expand Gwadar Port’s operational capacity by introducing additional shipping lines and launching a new ferry service to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The move is part of a broader government effort to transform Gwadar into a major maritime and logistics hub in the Arabian Sea.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting in Islamabad, chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. In his statement, the minister emphasized that Gwadar Port is now fully operational, and efforts must be intensified to integrate it with global shipping networks and regional trade corridors.

As part of the initiative, new shipping routes will be developed to reduce the burden on existing ports, enhance transit trade with Central Asia and the Middle East, and streamline cargo movement. The strategy also includes measures to strengthen Gwadar’s role in regional connectivity and economic development.

A ferry service linking Gwadar with GCC countries is also in the pipeline. This service aims to provide a direct and cost-effective maritime route for passengers and goods, with particular benefits for expatriates and small-scale traders operating across borders.
